Applique wall hanging, 'Laundry Lady'

A pleasant plateau in the Peruvian Andes is abloom with flowers while citrus trees are laden with fragrant fruit. Amid all this beauty, a woman takes her laundry to the river and scrubs clothes clean. Ducks accompany her in a sunny composition by Marcela Paredes Huacles.

She creates this beautiful wall hanging in intricate arpillería – embroidered appliqués of fabric cutouts hand-stitched to a background of tocuyo cloth, a coarsely woven cotton. Crafted in three dimensions, each figure is lavishly embroidered; a crocheted border finishes the piece.

60% cotton, 30% synthetic, 5% wool, 5% thread. Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent.
